In real life people are addicted to a whole lot of things; smoking, alcohol, drugs, gambling, p*rnography and so on. Although some of these lifestyles are not directly spelt out as sin in the scriptures, they have ruined individuals, families, businesses etc.
If you are struggling with any form of addiction today or know someone who is, let this inspire hope in your heart and help you to effortlessly break out and overcome whatever it is that seems to have taken a hold of you.
So how can one break out of addictions?
First, you need to understand that addictions are only as powerful as you view them in your mind. Drugs, cigarettes, alcohol and so on do not on their own have the ability to control and dominate you completely.
You give them that much power when you accord them much importance in your mind. The real battle is in your mind. This is why the Bible pointed out the renewal of the mind as the number one way to radically transform our lives.
(Rom 12:2) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
So if you are ever going to break out of them, you need to start viewing them as “mere” substances or activities and not some powerful stuff you can’t do without. That is how to begin your journey to victory.
Secondly, consider creating or partnering in a system that will put an end to your money problems rather than going for temporal solutions. For instance, gambling addiction is caused and fuelled by money problems. The lack of money is a long-term problem that temporal solutions such as gambling cannot really put an end to.
To ultimately deal with the gambling addiction, you will need to go for other real alternatives that are capable of generating money for you. This is where learning and starting your own business comes in. No matter how little it is. You can also work for an already existing one.
Such properly gotten money has a way of naturally boosting your confidence and self-esteem to the point gambling would appear as a waste of time and resources to you.
Consider developing a business plan (you can even ask people to help you do this) and submitting it to different micro-finance banks, entrepreneurship organizations, churches and as well share your ideas with family and friends to help you raise some capital to start.
Thirdly, get out of toxic relationships. Toxic relationships and people here are not only those who introduce you to all kinds of “latest” sex movies, drugs and drinks so you could always get high with them. They are also those who take pleasure in constantly tearing you down emotionally. Those who always make you feel like your life is meaningless and that you can never amount to anything in life. Stay very far away from them as possible, they are not worth having around you.
I know lots of people who got into one addiction or the other because people they value and cherish so much hurt their emotions not just once but a countless number of times. Let the guys you roll with be positive people who constantly build you up for good.
Lastly, enrich your mind with the Word of God and be filled with the Spirit. In his admonition to the Galatians, apostle Paul puts it this way.
(Gal 5:16) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Addiction is a lust of the flesh that the Spirit of God can help us overcome if we will let Him. Part of how we let Him do this in us is by deliberately choosing to saturate our minds with the Word of God.
The Word of God here is not just anything people pick out of the Bible to use to threaten, crush and put us in bondage to fear. No! The Word here is the true Gospel of the grace of God revealed in His Son Jesus which is able to build us up spiritually.

Glory to God!
